Bunyan Meeting Church, Museum and Library
The Bunyan Meeting Church was founded in 1650. Then, in 1672, the congregation purchased an orchard in Mill Street, and used a barn there for meetings. This was replaced by a new church building in 1707 and that was in turn replaced by the present building, which opened in 1850. The bronze doors were installed in 1876.
John Bunyan became the minister in 1672, following his release from prison. He remained in post until his death in 1688.
The magnificent bronze entry doors were inspired by Pisano and Ghiberti's doors on the baptistery of Florence's Duomo. They, and the church's the beautiful stained glass windows, depict scenes from The Pilgrim's Progress.
The John Bunyan Museum and Library was set up in 1988 and depicts Bunyan's life and times, including his imprisonment in Bedford gaol. Visitors can wander through the displays and experience something of life in the 17th century.
